켄 이시와타(1947년~ 2019년)는 일본 마란츠 디자인 트렌드를 선도하고 총괄하셨던 분. 작년에 작고.
10대 시절 미국 마란츠 기기를 참조하여 자신만의 기기를 만드는 과정에서 좋은 제품과 아닌 것의 차이 그리고 그 이유를 알게 되었다고 한다. (스스로 동기를 부여하는 자가학습이 그래서 중요하다)
“1978년, 캔 이시와타가 마란츠에서 처음 맡은 일은 일본 엔지니어들과 유럽 품질관리부서(註, 필립스) 사이에서 업무를 조정하는 것이었습니다. 그 역무를 수행하면서 많은 것을 배웠고 이후 10대 때부터 관심이 있던 스피커와 전자제품 개발 부문에 눈을 돌리게 됩니다. 이미 개발자로서의 경험이 있었다는 뜻인데… 단적인 에피소드로서, 아버지의 친구에게 빌린 Marantz Model 7C를 가지고 자신만의 프리앰프를 직접 만든 적이 있었고 값싼 부품들을 쓴 탓에 기대보다 좋은 소리가 나지 않았다는 사실에 큰 충격을 받았다고 합니다”
Ken’s first job at Marantz in 1978 was solving the problem of misunderstanding between the Japanese engineering group and European quality control department. “I learned so much by doing this, then I turned my attention to loudspeakers, and then electronics.” He had been building both since his early teens back in Japan, so was very much in his element. Indeed Ken crafted his very own copy of the iconic Marantz Model 7C preamplifier, having borrowed one from his father’s friend to reverse engineer. 아래, 디자인 너무 마음에 드는 CD-45에 대해 본인 스스로 밝힌 일화가 있다. 50 파운드를 더 받을 수 있었던 즉응적인 사운드 튜닝이라니… 역시 뛰어난 오디오 디자이너는 그림만 잘 그려서 되는 게 아니다.

“최초의 실버 디스크 스피너인 필립스 CD100은 훌륭한 기기였지만 Marantz 버전을 만들면서 전원 공급장치와 디지털 필터를 약간 변경했고 결과는 매우 만족스러웠습니다. 솔직히 말해서 Sony CDP-101과 같은 경쟁 기기들은 비교가 되지 않을 정도였지요. 이후 기술이 발전하고… 필립스는 16 비트 오버 샘플링 버전을 출시했습니다. 당시 영국 창고에 약 3천 개의 CD-45가 있었습니다. 전무 이사가 “90파운드로 팔면 될까?” 하며 가격을 어떻게 정해야 할지를 물었습니다. 저는 “제게 만지작거릴 수 있는 기회를 주세요. 더 좋은 음악 들려주는 대가로 50파운드를 더 받는게 좋습니다” 라고 말했습니다. 그리고는… 2천 대 한정판 발매가 결정되었는데 불과 2주 만에 완판되었습니다”
The original Philips CD100 – the company’s first-ever silver disc spinner – was a good machine, but when the Marantz version came out, it had some modifications to improve it further. “We made some changes to the power supply and in the digital filter. We were very happy with the results. To be honest, rival machines like the Sony CDP-101 were no comparison! Then, technology progressed and Philips eventually came out with their 16-bit, four times oversampling chips. At that time, we had about three thousand CD-45s sitting in the warehouse in the UK, and the managing director asked what we were going to do with them. ‘Maybe we should sell them for ninety-nine pounds?’ The marketing manager didn’t want that, but it seemed like we had no choice. So I said, ‘Wait a minute, I am going to modify these 14-bit machines, and I’m going to make the most musical CD player available, and then we’re going to sell them for fifty pounds more!’ We finally decided on a limited edition run of two thousand. I did my modifications and took a prototype to a classical musician friend of mine, and he was amazed. So it came out – and they all sold out within two weeks. 최근 디자인들은… 외형만으로는 다소 식상한 하이엔드 풍. 개인 취향에는 그렇다. 그러나 기기 모양과 음을 함께 다루시던 분이라, Sound Master 호칭을 얻은 분이시라 그가 만든 물체 안에 무엇이 들어 있는지는 모른다.
